The neurology service at CARE offers a specialised approach to the investigation and treatment of neurological conditions in small animals.
Our specialist neurologist, Dr Sam Long, cares for patients with complex brain and spinal conditions as well as peripheral nerve and muscle diseases.
Signs that your pet may have a neurological condition include:
- Abnormal posture
- Visual and hearing deficits
- Muscle wasting
Initial investigation includes a consultation, where a thorough history and physical examination, (including a focused neurological examination) is performed. When appropriate, Dr Long may then discuss advanced imaging of the nervous system. Imaging options include computed tomography (using our new Siemens 16-slice CT scanner), myelography, fluoroscopy or MRI. In some cases the electrodiagnostics (nerve conduction studies, electromyography, BEAR studies) are indicated to further characterise the patient’s illness. Once the cause of the neurological signs is further defined, then a plan can be put in place to treat/manage the problem. This may involve medication and, in some cases, surgery.
